 My Story

I am a registered dietitian nutritionist and a certified diabetes educator trained in providing evidence-based clinical nutrition counseling to help you take control of your health through the food you choose to eat.

I love food! I love eating food, I love making food, and I love exploring new foods from different cultures and learning the history behind these ingredients and flavors. I am strong believer that all foods (with perhaps a few exceptions) can fit within a healthy diet for chronic disease management.

Nutrition can often be confusing - there is so much information and misinformation about what you should and should not eat constantly being shared, and it can be difficult to sift through all of this information and adopt long-lasting nutrition habits that bring about positive changes in your life.

My mission is to break down complex nutrition science into digestible bites of personalized nutrition recommendations and guide you to successfully reach your health and nutrition goals.

I started my journey toward becoming a dietitian when I moved from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Bozeman, MT to pursue a college degree. Almost a decade later I find myself in Seattle, WA, working as a clinical dietitian and certified diabetes educator with a strong passion to use my knowledge and training to make our world a healthier place, one person at a time.

Why Brown Sugar Nutrition?

It’s pretty simple, actually.

First, I’m Brown. I have experienced personal frustrations with how nutrition practice has historically been white-centric, which means many nutrition resources and education tools available are developed based on traditional Western foods and eating habits. I want to acknowledge that there is more than one “right way of eating” and make sure that I honor your food values and food culture when providing nutrition recommendations and education.

Second, sugar is getting a lot of bad press these days, but what a lot of us fail to realize is that all carbs contain sugar (including the healthy ones with tons of fiber). I want to highlight how some carbs can be part of a healthy plate to help prevent and manage chronic disease .

Lastly, I’m a registered dietitian, aka a nutrition expert!
